SUMMER MUSIC at GPC

From Sunday, July 4, through Sunday, August 22, the Chancel Choir will take a much-deserved summer break. A big thank you to them for all that they do for music and worship at GPC throughout the year. For those Sundays that the Chancel Choir will not be in the choir loft, we will use ensembles, quartets and special choirs to lead us in worship. I hope that you will find a Sunday or two that fits your schedule and that you will choose to participate in SUMMER MUSIC 2010 at GPC.

August 15 – Sunday School Children’s Choir – Kick-off Sunday – All Sunday School children will meet in the choir loft at 10:30 a.m.

August 22 – Women of the Church – All women are welcome. Meet in the choir loft at 9:45 a.m.

August 29 – Chancel Choir returns to the choir loft. Meet at 10:20 a.m.

I encourage each of you to find a Sunday to sing. Be an active part of SUMMER MUSIC 2010 at GPC.

Jerold C. Teachey, D.M, Director of Music, GPC

Kelsey Will Receives Teachey Scholarship Award

Kelsey Will, who has just graduated from Collierville High School, is this year’s recipient of an award from the Teachey Scholarship Fund. Kelsey will attend Mississippi State University in the fall and has been very active in music at GPC for the past few years. She has been a soloist in worship on numerous occasions and most recently has been a leader with the youth music group YHOP. She will continue to be active in music and Christian youth activities at Mississippi State. Congratulations Kelsey, we wish you all the best.

The Jerold Teachey Scholarship Fund was established to honor Jerold on the occasion of his 10th anniversary as Director of Music at GPC. The fund is used to encourage and support GPC youth and college students who are active in music at GPC. We want to encourage them to continue developing their musical talent and to continue using it for the glory of God. The fund is a designated fund of GPC.  Contributions are always welcome and necessary for the fund to continue to be active. Checks should be made to GPC with a note in the memo area for the Jerold Teachey Scholarship Fund.

Music is an integral part of worship at Germantown Presbyterian. The Chancel Choir enhances the 11:00 worship service with awe-inspiring presentations. During the year, a variety of special musical events are presented. Many of these are accompanied by brass quintet, strings and other instruments in addition to the 32 rank pipe organ. The Chancel Choir rehearsals are Wednesdays 7:15 - 9:00 p.m. Children participate through their own age-based singing choirs, plus a hand bell choir.

MUSIC OPPORTUNITIES AT GPC

The Chancel Choir, open to all age groups, sings primarily at 11:00 a.m. worship and at 8:45 a.m. worship at Easter and during Advent. Rehearsals are held Wednesday evenings 7:15 p.m. – 8:45 p.m. Dr. Jerold Teachey is the director.

Children and adults at GPC are encouraged to join one of the bell choirs as the ringers worship the Lord. As the bell choirs continue to grow, there is a need for additional bells to add to our 3 octave set. Any donations toward purchase of additional bells are welcome. Contact Carolyn Mason, Organist, 754-5195, for more information.

GPC Handbells Have Rich History

When American businesses talk about operating for 150 years, our friends "across the pond" snicker or smile politely. Through careful research and a telephone call to London, England, Carolyn Mason has learned about the rich history of the Whitechapel Bell Foundry, an over 400-year old company that cast the GPC handbells. The three-octave set of bells was cast by Whitechapel in 1965 for purchase by the Westwood Presbyterian Church, Cincinnati, Ohio. GPC acquired the bells from the church in the 1990s.

Famous bells made by Whitechapel include the original Liberty Bell (1752) and Big Ben (1858) at the Palace of Westminster. Handbells are cast in sand moulds using metal patterns resembling the finished bell. A set of bells is regarded as a single musical instrument, and assembled and matched for tonal balance. During tuning, they are turned and burnished on a lathe to get the highly polished finish.
